Seedlings

What to grow and sow this new year…

January-seedlings

January may feel like a slow month as far as growing is concerned, but there are a fair few seedlings that you can grow under glass in the first few months of the year.

Here are some ideas on what seedlings you could be growing now and will be ready come springtime.

Flowers to grow and sow:

  • Sow Antirrhinum nanum ‘Frosted Flames’ (snap dragons) in a propagator.
These plants need a long growth period before flowering so sow now for
    the best results.
  • Sow lobelia pendula under glass for planting up containers and hanging
    baskets during the warmer months.
  • Start sweet pea seeds off on a sunny windowsill this month.

Vegetables and herbs to sow and grow:

  • Start sprouting first early potatoes as they arrive. Stand them on end in a
module tray or egg box and place them in a bright, cool, frost-free place.
Grow potatoes in containers under cover in potato bags for a very early
    crop.
  • Sow celeriac and celery in a heated propagator.
  • Grow your favourite herb seeds on your window sills.

Fruit to sow and grow:

  • Try growing rhubarb from seed. Thinly sow the seed in a heated
propagator or on a warm windowsill. Germination should occur between
21 and 40 days after sowing.
  • Start woodland strawberries in seed trays in a sheltered spot.
