Grow Tents – Your Questions Answered

Grow Tents FAQs

In this FAQ post, we’ve answered some of the common questions we get asked about choosing a grow tent.

Q. What is a grow tent used for?

A. A grow tent is a portable, enclosed frame that allows you to grow a variety of plants indoors all year-round. They are commonly used by people who lack space or the natural light needed to grow their own produce indoors as they allow you to manipulate and control the plants environment.

By creating and maintaining an artificial climate you have complete control over, you will be providing a safe environment for your plants to grow in regardless of the conditions outside of it.

Q. How do grow tents work?

A. Grow tents work by allowing you to control light, temperature, and humidity in order to create the perfect conditions for your plant’s growth.

All plants need light. The tent helps to optimise light conditions so the plants can perform photosynthesis which they need in order to grow and develop. The light is provided by grow lighting which simulates natural sunlight.

Temperature is vital. A grow tent offers insulation which retains the heat generated by the grow lighting along with ventilation which helps the air to circulate.

Humidity levels are important. The tent will provide the perfect climate in which to control humidity by allowing you to maintain light and temperature, and monitor it.

Q. What materials are grow tents made from?

A. They are made from a heavy-duty canvas outer layer, usually nylon or polyester, which is bonded to a reflective inner layer made from Biaxially-orientated Polyethylene Terephthalate (BoPET), and they have super strong zips and double light proof stitching.

The frame and corners are made from heavy duty steel so that they can support lighting and extraction systems.

Q. What else do I need when I buy a grow tent?

A. Staring out with grow tents can seem a bit daunting but it really doesn’t need to be. There are plenty of complete grow tent kits available which contain everything you need to get started growing your own produce.

With a complete grow tent kit, you will get the equipment that is compatible with the size of tent you buy. So, you will have the correct light, ballast, ventilation and accessories you need to get growing straight away.

Q. Where can I set up my grow tent?

A. It can be set up anywhere where you have space indoors, a spare room or a cupboard for example, and they are also suitable to place in a garage, however, we recommend you make sure that the floor is waterproof.

When setting up your tent, you will need to make sure that there is ample ground and overhead space. Ensure that the doors will work with the space you have and that you will have easy access. So be sure to measure the intended location carefully and select a tent that fits the space.

Q. Will a grow tent smell?

A. To get their aroma, plants release volatile organic compounds into the air, therefore grow tents can become smelly. However, these smells can be removed.

There are a few ways to get rid of smells, for example, carbon filters will scrub plant smells out of the air before extracting them.

Outside of the grow tent, you can use oudour neutralisers. These are really strong and very powerful at removing unwanted odours.

We stock a range of odour eliminators from leading brands such as ONA and Zerum.

Q. How many plants can I grow in a tent?

A. This depends on the size of the grow tent and the available power for the grow lights.

You need to make sure that there will be enough light for each plant. If you are growing herbs you will be able to fit more pots in your tent, however, anything tall or bushy will require more growing space.
